VW's self-park set for range roll-out

Date: 27 November 2006   |   Author:

Volkswagen's new ParkAssist system will be rolled out across the majority of the company's model range - as long as it's well-received in its initial application in the facelifted Touran mini-MPV.

The system automatically manoeuvres the car into a space. It measures the size of a space as you drive past, alerting the driver to a suitable spot. Then it controls the steering to dock the car in the parking space, although the throttle and brake are still under the driver's control to avoid any liability in the event of a parking scrape.

The price is yet to be confirmed, but expect it to be around £500, or £200 if the car's already fitted with front and rear parking sensors.

ParkAssist will be available as an option for the Touran from late spring, and works with either manual or automatic gearboxes. The only VW cars that won't receive the system will be the citycar Fox and supermini Polo.
