Audi takes the lid off A3 Cabriolet

Date: 30 November 2007

Audi has revealed what it describes as its "first ever compact cabriolet".

The A3 Cabriolet, compete with fabric folding roof instead of the metal option favoured by most brands these days, arrives in the UK next spring with a choice of four engine options, 105PS 1.9 and 140PS 2.0 diesels, and turbocharged 160PS 1.8 and 200PS 2.0-litre petrol units.

Two hood options will be offered, lower spec Standard models get the semi-automatic version that has a latch handle, while on the more expensive Sport trim it's fully automatic. Audi claims the faster of the two closes in nine seconds, though it won't say which version that is, and the automatic version operates at speeds up to 18mph.

The car slots between the other two A3 models, longer than a three-door but shorter than the Sportback.

Prices will be announced nearer launch, but Audi says the car will be "very competitive" against BMW's new 1-series Convertible, which starts from £24,055.
