Audi's new RS6 superpower estate

Date: 05 September 2007

Audi has launched details of what it hopes will be in contention for world's quickest estate car.

Using the S6's 5.2-litre V10 as a base, the Ingolstadt-based firm has added not one but two turbos to boost power to a faintly absurd 580PS. Performance is not expected to be wanting and to verge on the ballistic with the 0-60mph dash obliterated in less than 4.6secs and top speed that could even exceed 200mph if it were not for the 155mph speed limiter calling time.

Distinguishing between the RS6 and the 'lesser' S6 is a more muscular body work and different LED running lights, while under the skin the flagship A6 gains a quicker shifting six-speed auto, adaptive suspension and the option of mighty ceramic brake discs with the 20-inch wheel package.

Perhaps the biggest indication that the RS will not be an overnight business sensation is the lowly 20mpg combined figure and the ability to use the rip computer to time laps.

Pricing is expected to be around £75,000 for the RS6 Avant.
