BMW makes misfuelling system standard

Date: 14 December 2007

BMW's anti-misfuelling device is now standard on all diesel models, after the X5 plus 6- and 7-series models joined the rest of the German firm's range, which has been fitted with the Incorrect Fuelling Protection System since March.

AA figures put the number of misfuels at 150,000 per year, but BMW's system prevents this by only releasing the tank locking system when the larger diesel pump is inserted and touches two contact patches. The smaller petrol nozzle isn't able to touch both at once.

Ford has a similar system on the Mondeo and facelifted Focus.

BMW has also announced pricing on two new models. The 1-series, on sale in April, convertible will cost £24,055 for the 120i Convertible ES, rising to £26,195 for the 125i SE Convertible, while the M3 saloon will cost £49,210 - almost £1500 cheaper than its coupe sibling - when it lands in the UK next March.
