CFC boss attacks 'useless' online risk programs

Date: 11 June 2007

Andy Leech

CFC boss Andy Leach has launched a scathing attack on "worse than useless" online risk assessment programs, and called for fleets to stop "unconsciously using online driver assessment as a means to dodge the main task of road risk management".

Leach singled out off-the-shelf products as worthless for failing to tailor to a firm's culture. Worse still according to the CFC boss, they face the risk of "potentially undermining a legal defence" in court.

"Online driver assessment are a blunt instrument [and] an easy way of deciding whether drivers are high or low risk. However, few fleets have actually taken a look at what these assessments do," said Leach complaining a fleet manager in court might know an employee was low risk from software results, but have little idea of how compliant they were at the time of the accident with company policies. Leach wants the introduction of a pyschometric content, but also warned it's too easy to fool assessments, saying "even the best online driver assessment can only form a small part of any risk management policy".
