Concept points to new baby Land Rover

Date: 20 December 2007

Land Rover LRX

Land Rover has revealed pictures of a concept car rumoured to be a new entry-level model below the Freelander.

The LRX concept will be revealed at January's Detroit motor show. The company describes it as indicating "the brand's progressive shift into new areas of the market".

"The LRX has unmistakable Land Rover design and the breadth of capability that you'd expect from our vehicles," said Land Rover managing director Phil Popham. "But it carries those essentials into a segment where the brand has never been before, and with a proposed level of efficiency that would make it one of the cleanest vehicles in its class."

The concept adopts eco technologies first shown in the Land_e concept vehicle, although exact powertrain details will be held back until the car's Detroit unveiling in mid-January.

Rumoured to be scheduled for a 2010 launch, the production model has been called Landie in reports, but Land Rover is yet to make any official comment on the production plan.
