England's one of the safest places to drive in Europe

Date: 27 February 2007

The Audit Commission has found England is in the top three safest places to drive in Europe - behind the Netherlands and Sweden - but 3000 people still perished on English roads costing the economy more than £8bn.

However, England didn't fare well on child deaths in particular, and it was joined by Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, which were among the worst for infant fatalities.

The commission also found that, according to police data, good progress has been made in reducing injury and death in the past 10 years, although this contrasts with an analysis of recent hospital admissions that suggested that the number of road casualties has, in fact, remained static. An investigation has been launched by the DfT.
