Europe planning car industry emissions reprieve?

Date: 26 October 2007

The European Parliament appears to be slackening its stance on vehicle emissions after voting to extend the deadline for carmakers to cut CO2 emissions, as well as slightly increasing the target.

Having previously been set a tough average 120g/km by 2012 that they claimed wasn't possible to meet, it looks likely that carmakers must now average 125g/km by 2015 with financial penalties for failure to adhere. The European Parliament voted 367 to 269 in favour of the extended deadline, though the decision isn't legally binding. A European Commission document will be released around the end of this year.

A Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders spokeswoman said last week's vote was "more of a political signal, but it will hold some weight with the Commission". A final decision is likely around late 2009.
