Exclusive! Dodge mini-MPV to take on S-max from 2008

Date: 12 January 2007   |   Author: Guy Bird

US muscle brand Dodge will offer a mini-MPV in the UK within the next two years.

Chrysler Group's UK managing director, Peter Lambert, told BusinessCar the vehicle will arrive in the UK by late 2008 or early 2009 and would be pitched as a Ford S-max rival.

The mini-MPV - which could potentially be sold as a five- and seven-seater - will follow a host of other business user-focused Dodge product coming to the UK in the next 12 months as the brand aims to re-establish itself in a market where it was previously only known for huge pick-ups and brawny sports cars.

The Focus-rivalling Caliber started the charge in 2006 with 2000 mainly retail sales after a mid-year launch and will be joined this summer by the Freelander-sized Dodge Nitro 4x4 and the bold Mondeo-class Avenger (pictured) in September.

Although compact in size, the Nitro will, according to Lambert "be a proper 4x4 with low ratio gears", offer high specification and retail for about £18,000-£22,000. The off-roader will also feature an all-new 2.8-litre diesel engine and 3.7 V6 petrol unit.

The Avenger four-door saloon will boast the VW-sourced 140PS 2.0 diesel plus two petrols (2.0 and 2.4) and be priced squarely in the mainstream upper medium sector from about £15,000-£19,000. But Lambert said he would not be pushing mainstream volume-sized sales: "We'll do 2000 per year to start with as we want the car to find its own level. We also want to make sure the contract hire and leasing industry understand our strategy from front and rear end pricing and maintenance.

"The parts price reductions, extended service intervals and reduced service content announced last September and implemented from January 1 this year will all help with that strategy."
