EXCLUSIVE: Vectra replacement nears new name decision

Date: 20 September 2007   |   Author: John Mahoney

Opel Insignia

Vauxhall has revealed two names that have been shortlisted for the replacement for the Vectra.

The news follows BusinessCar's exclusive revelation at the end of last year that the company's next generation large family car will drop the Vectra name on residual grounds, following a rumoured heated backroom tussle between senior General Motors' execs.

The favoured name is understood to be Insignia, after the concept car that hinted at the look of the new Vauxhall.

Many execs wanted to keep the familiar name that, like the Mondeo, had become synonymous with business drivers, but a spokesman for the firm confirmed the Vectra name was not on the shortlist.

However, Vauxhall refused to confirm the Insignia name as the Vectra's replacement, though the spokesman said two names were in strong contention.

The all-new car is expected to be unveiled at next year's British motor show, going on sale later in 2008.
