FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW: VW brings Up! Beetle

Date: 11 September 2007

Up!

Volkswagen has stunned show goers by attempting to reinvent the Beetle, one of the world's best-selling cars.

The concept, named Up!, will be the brand's attempt to offer emerging markets such as China a cheap car costing less than £4000, though insiders have already confirmed Europe would get the snazzy city car too.

Powered by either a two- or three-cylinder engines, engineers are working hard to make the spiritual successor to the much-loved Beetle as mechanically tough and efficient as possible. Currently, insiders say test cars are capable of beating 81mpg on the combined cycle, but VW engineers will not rest until the magical 'three litres per 100km is achieved' - over 94mpg in our language.

European variants of the Up! are expected to be here before the end of the decade.

In the meantime, fleets running chauffeur services will probably be interest in the 'Maxi Life' version of the Caddy van, that has been confirmed for the UK.

It will be available with either a 140 or 104PS engine and will be marketed as a seven-seat with luggage vehicle. Pricing will be announced after the show.

Volkswagen insiders have also confirmed the Bluemotion low-CO2 collection of vehicles will be stretched to include more of the Golf range and even include the Caddy van.
