The start point for the best source of fleet information

Grey fleet safety warning

Date: 30 October 2007   |   Author: David Motton

Britain's 'grey' fleet is a health and safety disaster waiting to happen, according to research by fleet management firm Arval.

The report shows that many companies are failing in their duty of care to employees using their own car for work purposes - the so-called 'grey' fleet.

The survey quizzed over 400 fleets, and found that over half (53%) fail to check their employees have business insurance cover. More than a third (35%) don't check driving licences, and almost three-quarters (74%) don't require employees to produce an MoT certificate. The statistics are even worse for smaller fleets, which often don't have a dedicated fleet manager.

Arval's head of market insight, Mike Waters, said: "It's clear that the grey fleet often sits outside normal company car policy and reporting and communication channels." That's in spite of greys accounting for around one in four vehicles driven on business.

Executive director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), Robert Gifford, said: "Too many employers have abrogated responsibility for those using their own vehicle at work and fail to regard work-related driving as a critical health and safety issue."

This approach could have dire consequences, warns Waters: "Solving the problem isn't rocket science. The industry needs to supply the same level of support to the grey fleet as to its company car drivers.'
