Highways Agency on-line traffic news gets evermore sophisticated

An increasingly large armoury of traffic jam-spotting, internet-based travel information technology is becoming available from the Highways Agency, including a multi-transport route finder that compares car times with a combination of trains and buses.

That's according to Pete Smith, an area performance manager for the Highways Agency, who delivered the third seminar on the final day of last week's BusinessCar Live.

Smith revealed that instant traffic information is delivered by the website www.trafficengland.com, whose maps allow travellers to quickly identify traffic snarl-ups on the motorways or A-roads under the Agency's control.

Fleet managers with a regular need for traffic information can plug into an RSS news feed, which uses simple downloadable technology to supply ticker-tape information or pop-up balloons to the screen warning of fresh hell on the roads.

The route-planning website www.transportdirect.info is also available to embed into company sites, enabling a company's employees to check if a journey can be made quicker using public transport.

For more detailed traffic information the Agency also offers the professional-aimed Atlas Pro, which draws on 1000 cameras and 3500 inductive loops in the tarmac to deliver real-time information on journey times and average traffic speeds between two points, e.g. motorway junctions. The Agency has also launched an internet radio channel specifically offering traffic updates.

The Highway Agency supplies its traffic information to other route-finding and satnav companies such as Trafficmaster.
