Hybrid market doubles in 12 months

Date: 04 June 2007

The number of hybrid cars registered in the UK doubled in the past 12 months, with 6568 registered in the first five months of this year compared with 3117 between January and May 2006.

Honda claims to have sold more hybrids in May than it has ever before in a single month, registering 604 Civic Hybrids. The Japanese firm has also announced a deal to supply Camden Car Club - a London car-sharing scheme - with 45 Civic Hybrids.

Meanwhile, Lexus has confirmed it will supply two of its new LS600h to chauffer fleet Chauffer-First. The firm has already taken 18 GS450h hybrid models, with another five on order. Chauffer-First claims it will phase out its current fleet that includes BMW, Audi and Mercedes, replacing them with hybrid models. It will order another 20 Lexus hybrids before the end of the year.
