Hydrogen push as BMW takes delivery of 7-series fleet

Date: 14 May 2007

BMW has taken delivery of its first eight hydrogen-powered BMW 7-series cars, which will be used for a series of brand-boosting educational driving events through the summer.

The factory-built Hydrogen 7 emits nothing but water vapour, but requires a refuelling network to be in place before it could be taken to the mass market.

"BMW can produce hydrogen-powered cars on the production line and the time is right to engage with business leaders and politicians in order to progress the development of a hydrogen highway - the fuelling and infrastructure requirements that make hydrogen a viable fuel for the consumer," said BMW UK marketing boss Uwe Ellinghaus. "We hope that experiencing these cars in normal driving situations will encourage people to join the debate."

The Hydrogen 7 can switch between running on hydrogen or petrol, both using the same 260PS 12-cylinder engine with the driver able to switch between the two via a steering wheel-mounted button, similar to LPG power vehicles.
