Leasing exec demands better vehicle recall system

Date: 27 February 2007

A senior leasing industry executive has written an open letter to transport minister Stephen Ladyman to call for a better and safer recall system for vehicle faults.

In the letter Autolease operations director David Kershaw points out that in 2005, of the 1.9m cars subject to a manufacturer recall 160,000 have not been fixed.

Kershaw believes this communication failure could be fixed using a unified recall process so that there is the greatest chance of drivers finding out about any safety work needed for their car.

Kershaw goes as far as to suggest that automated number plate recognition devices are used at filling stations to warn drivers of outstanding problems.
