LibDems hit out at falling cost of running cars

Date: 20 July 2007

Susan Kramer

The Liberal Democrats has accused the Government of making cars too cheap to run, following recently revealed Department for Transport statistics on transport costs.

Car travel costs have fallen 10% in the past 10 years compared to public transport as bus travel costs have jumped 13% since 1997 and train travel has risen by 6%.

The figures were revealed by Labour's transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick following a parliamentary question on the matter tabled by LibDem transport spokesman Susan Kramer.

Speaking in last Wednesday's The Independent newspaper, Kramer said: "When we are all concerned about climate change, Government strategy that increases the cost of public transport while motoring costs fall is outrageous."
