M1 motorway tops congestion hotspot poll

Date: 14 May 2007

Junction's 6a - 11 on the M1 motorway has been identified as the worst place in the UK for congestion according to a new survey.

The hotspot was jointly identified by Trafficmaster and the RAC Foundation by recording the number of congestion alerts during May '06- April '07. The M1 logged an incredible 145,000 alerts, compared to the western sector of the M25 near Heathrow that had just 5000 fewer.

According to both traffic experts the first quarter of 2007 has seen congestion rise by 0.8% compared to 2006 and pegs congestion's cost to the economy as high as £20 billion per year in resource and lost time.
