New boss shakes up Honda sales department

Date: 10 January 2007   |   Author: Tristan Young

New Honda sales boss Bernard Bradley

New Honda sales boss Bernard Bradley has reshuffled his dealer-support staff in a bid to improve business car sales.

Giving his first interview since moving to Honda from BMW five months ago, Bradley, whose official title is head of sales, cars, said he had merged two dealer-facing teams into one.

"Corporate sales are running at 40% at the moment. That will grow," said Bradley.

He intends to achieve this growth by working with Honda dealers. "The network is fantastic at retail. And over the past five years they have become more involved in the corporate market."

To boost this further, Bradley identified a need to change the way Honda contacted its dealers: "In the final part of 2006 we restructured our field team. Internally it wasn't clear who dealt with and looked after the dealers. It is now crystal clear - the dealer-facing team is responsible for all aspects. Previously there was a sales team and a corporate sales team. As long as you have two teams then they will drift apart."

Speaking ahead of the final 2006 sales figures Bradley said he expected Honda to end the year 0.5% down on 2005, but ahead of the overall market trend, which he expected to come in 3.9% down on 2005.

However, he was even more bullish about 2007. "Next year we'll grow 7-8% in total. That's 3-4% in retail and 11-12% in corporate in the next calendar year."
