New diesel Mini to star in Geneva

Date: 18 January 2007

The Geneva motor show will see the Mini's engine line-up completed with the arrival of a 95PS 1.4 petrol, called the Mini One, and an efficient 1.6 Cooper diesel capable of 64.2mpg.

Both engines are new, with the 1.4 derived from the existing 1.6 petrol that made its debut in the Cooper model. Despite the lower output the smaller engine is still capable of reasonable performance, sprinting to 60 in less than 10.9 seconds and topping out at 115mph while averaging a decent 49.6mpg. Decent, that is, until you compare it with the diesel's stunning average. The 110PS diesel also earns the Cooper model designation thanks to its ability to shave a second off the One's 0-62mph sprint while topping out at 121mph.

Both come with a six-speed manual as standard with the One available with the option of a six-speed automatic.

The engines join the rest of the Mini range in April, with Mini One pricing starting at £11,595, while Cooper D prices start at £14,190.
