New Mazda boss wants dealers to pursue local firms

Date: 29 January 2007   |   Author: Tristan Young

Mazda has appointed James Hopkins as its new fleet director. Hopkins takes over from Adam Pumfrey who has moved to Fiat and Alfa Romeo.

Hopkins was previously managing director of Ford Credit in Hungary and has worked for Mazda in the UK before, also under the Ford Credit umbrella.

Fiat and Alfa Romeo fleet boss Tony Dittli confirmed he had appointed Pumfrey, but refused to reveal what role the ex-Mazda fleet boss would play, raising speculation that there would soon be a fleet department reshuffle at Fiat and Alfa Romeo.

Mazda's Hopkins aims to help more of Mazda's 158 dealers to secure corporate business, particularly from companies in their local area. He also plans to launch a major vehicle remarketing initiative.

He said: "Historically both the brand and our dealers have been retail orientated, but we have become more fleet-focused as a company and some of our dealers have reaped the benefits. I now want more of our dealers to share in our corporate sales success by actively pursuing businesses close to their operations.

"Mazda has done fantastically well in securing user-chooser business and because of our rich sports car heritage, which is also reflected in newer models such as the Mazda3 MPS and Mazda6 MPS, I believe we can reap further success as company car drivers look for something different from the mainstream to reflect their lifestyle."
