Nissan, Renault plan performance V6 diesel

Date: 09 October 2007

Nissan Murano

Nissan's low volume Murano and Infiniti models, due to arrive in October next year, will benefit from a new 3.0-litre V6 Renault-Nissan diesel engine, which should help the alliance regain lost ground on the twin-turbo V6 counterpart shared by Ford, Peugeot Citroen, Jaguar and Land Rover.

Pierre Loing, Nissan Europe's vice president for product strategy, said: "We will not extend our 4x4 portfolio but we are working on ideas to extend crossover concepts. Murano will come with a diesel in due course."

That is believed to mean within two years, which would improve its appeal among user choosers, currently limited by being available only in a 3.5-litre V6 petrol, automatic form plus a price of £30,085 and a CO2 figure of 295g/km.

At a more mainstream level Renault plans to fit the new twin-turbo, 265PS V6 diesel to its new Laguna flagship model and the Laguna Coupe, which is due on sale next Autumn.

While the Korean-built Renault Koleos crossover is due to market next summer, fitted with 2.0-litre dCi engines, a larger counterpart, also jointly developed with partners Samsung, is scheduled for UK market release in June 2009 powered by the bigger V6 diesel.

Further down the road a larger Renault saloon, also sourced from Korea, is another potential recipient for the engine. The Alliance cross-brand use of the power unit will extend to providing Infiniti with a premium diesel.

Its most likely applications are in the G35 saloon, the new EX crossover coupe and the planned FX sports 4x4 aimed at BMW's X5.

Sales of the Murano fell last year in the UK to 791 from 1122 units in 2005, while up until the end of September this year 354 were registered compared with 698 for the same period last year.
