Nissan to launch European electric car by 2012

Date: 19 September 2007

Nissan Mixim

Businesses can expect a car using the electric motor technology seen in the Nissan Mixim Frankfurt concept car on their fleets by 2012.

Speaking exclusively to BusinessCar at the German show, European product boss Pierre Loing said: "From a production point of view the electric supermotor technology could launch at the end of the decade in Japan with it reaching Europe a year or two later."

Loing said the technology was suitable for either an all-new car or a development of an existing model. "We could do both, and we are looking at both at the moment."

Nissan was one of the few car makers at the show not to reveal a low-CO2 sub-brand along the lines of BMW's efficient dynamics plan or Ford's Econetic models. Loing put this down to the Japanese firm's size and the high cost of developing the models for a relatively small number of sales. He did however, add that Nissan would piggy-back on any technology used by sister firm Renault.
