Peugeot reveals 308 estate and hybrid

Date: 29 August 2007   |   Author:

Peugeot will use next month's Frankfurt motor show to fill out its new 308 family with a pair of new concepts.

Despite the hatchback not even being on sale yet, a virtually production-ready SW estate version called Prologue will be unveiled ahead of sales getting underway next spring, as well as a new hybrid concept that the company claims will go on sale around 2010.

The 308 SW Prologue will again feature an optional third row of small "occasional" seats and a full-length glass panoramic roof, and the tailgate glass opens independently of the boot for easy access to the luggage area.

The front seat folds completely flat to create a three-metre long load carrying potential, and the second row features three individual sliding and folding chairs that can also be removed and slotted into the mounting points for the third row to offer more legroom.

The concept is more than 200mm longer than the 308 hatchback, half of which is in the wheelbase, and 62mm higher.

The SW accounted for 30% of the 307's sales, a figure that is expected to carry over when the new generation car arrives next year.

The 308 Hybrid HDI is a little further away, though Peugeot claims this is a concept that will make production, unlike previous hybrid concept cars from the company, and sister company Citroen.

The French firm claims the car emits 90g/km of CO2 and can improve urban fuel economy by 58% to 83mpg. PSA Peugeot Citroen has long been critical of the momentum being gained by petrol-electric hybrids, claiming a good diesel engine can achieve the same economy results, and that a diesel hybrid would be a better environmental solution.

The concept is powered by a 110PS 1.6-litre HDI diesel coupled with a 22PS electric motor, and Peugeot said it has reduced the concept's number of specific components by 30% compared with the 307 Hybrid concept it showed in 2006.

To be one of the first people in the UK to drive the 308, come to BusinessCar Live on 26&27 September.
