Revolutionary new BMW eco tech for 1-series

As exclusively revealed by BusinessCar in October, BMW has developed a series of new technologies that offer massive economy and emissions improvements without hitting performance.

Timed to coincide with the launch of the three-door 1-series, and a slightly restyled 5dr version, the developments, standard across the range, include automatic stop-start to cut the engine while the vehicle is stationary (only on manual gearbox models), as pioneered in the UK by Citroen. That's combined with a Brake Energy Regeneration system that uses a clever alternator to save on the amount of engine power needed to charge the battery.

Other fuel saving devices also fitted as standard to the 1-series include electric power steering and tweaks to the air conditioning system and the car's grille.

The result is economy improvements of up to 24% dependent on model, while emissions drop by up to 21%. Despite these figures, power outputs increase by up to 20PS (see table below).

The new eco-friendly 1-series range will be launched in the UK this April. Styling changes include a larger front grille and tweaked headlamp cluster, along with restyled rear bumper and indicators. The new three-door model can be order either as a five-seat model, or with just two sculpted rear seats and a central storage compartment.

The changes follow smaller eco benefits announced alongside the revised BMW 5-series range earlier this month.
