Smart to import LHD Fortwos but no diesel

Date: 19 February 2007

Smart will mirror the launch of its original City Coupe by importing a small number of left-hand drive Fortwo models ahead of the September launch.

The reason for the LHD models is the lengthy five-month difference between the April's European launch and the UK launch in September. Smart UK said there is demand for LHD models.

Smart also confirmed that it would not import the 45PS diesel that would be in the running for the UK's lowest polluting car. Despite producing just 90g/km of CO2 and averaging 84mpg, Smart says the model's lacklustre performance and 60,000 miles break-even point compared with the petrol will limit sales. Prices for the new Fortwo will be announced in June.
