Super-low CO2 Passat likely for UK

Date: 16 February 2007

VW Passat Bluemotion

VW will launch an ultra-low CO2 version of the Passat, dubbed Bluemotion, at the Geneva motor show next month.

The Passat has a CO2 output of 136g/km and an official fuel figure of 55.4mpg for the saloon version.

The Passat Bluemotion uses a 105PS diesel engine and has a claimed range of 838 miles.

Although the car is initially being launched only for the Continental market, a VW spokesman was optimistic that it would make it to the UK, and added that VW would study the success of the Polo Bluemotion set for UK launch in late summer.

The Polo Bluemotion, expected to cost £11,500, is capable of 72mpg and has a CO2 output of 102g/km thanks to an efficient 1.4-litre diesel.

Both the Bluemotion cars use longer gearing, better aerodynamics and special tyres to achieve their improved efficiencies.
