Volvo launches driver distraction safety system

Date: 07 September 2007

Volvo will make a new safety system available on the S80 and the all-new V70 and XC70 by the end of the year.

The £500 option, dubbed Driver Alert Control, monitors the car's progress on the road using screen-mounted camera. If the car's computer thinks the driver is distracted, either by a phone call or by tiredness, it will alert the driver with a message on the dash and a warning beep.

Volvo, which claims the DAC technology is a world first, is also including a lane departure warning system in the £500 option. It alerts a driver if they fail to indicate before changing lanes at speeds above 37mph.
