Women in the political driving seat

Date: 06 July 2007

Following Prime Minister Gordon Brown's appointment of Ruth Kelly as transport secretary and Rosie Winterton as roads and road safety minister (taking over from Douglas Alexander and Stephen Ladyman respectively) both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have appointed women to their key shadow transport roles.

For the Tories, David Cameron has appointed Theresa Villiers, while Menzies Campbell has chosen Susan Kramer for the LibDems.

Meanwhile, the new Chancellor is former secretary of state for transport Alistair Darling, while the trade and industry post goes to John Hutton.

George Osborne remains as shadow chancellor for the Conservatives and Vincent Cable is LibDem shadow chancellor.
