BMW reveals new X5 eco-concept

BMW will unveil a green-technology concept car based on the X5 at next month's Geneva motor show.
Dubbed Vision Efficient Dynamics, the concept looks nearly identical to the existing X5, but features a host of fuel and CO2-saving technology.
Power comes from BMW's 204PS twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel, as seen in the production 123d, coupled to a 20PS mild hybrid electric motor. The result is a claimed average fuel figure of 43.5mpg with a CO2 output of 172g/km.
The current X5's best fuel figure is 34.9mpg from the 3.0-litre diesel, with CO2 standing at 214g/km. BMW also claims the concept's fuel figure beats all rivals' figures. The performance is also competitive with a 0-62mph time of 8.9 seconds.
Helping the Vision concept's engine is a host of new and existing green technology operating under BMW's Efficient Dynamics brand.
BMW has fitted the concept with solar panels on the roof which are used to generate power so that the engine can be pre-heated. This cuts down on the amount of warming-up time for the engine - traditionally one of the least efficient periods for a diesel engine.
A spokesman for the firm added: "The chassis and ride-height of the X5 have been adapted for the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics. This includes aerodynamically-efficient 19-inch light alloy wheels with reduced ventilation. The design of the spokes reduces wind resistance to the extent that, at 100mph, the car has to produce one horsepower less than a conventionally-wheeled car. This benefit has not been included in the fuel consumption calculations but, on the road, the impact is noticeable."
BusinessCar's sources say that while the concept car is unlikely to be put straight into production, elements of the technology are expected to make it to some of BMW's model line-up.
