BUDGET 2008: April fuel tax rise postponed, but two more on the horizon

Date: 12 March 2008

Cars running on modern petrol have a lower list price than diesel equivalents

Chancellor Alistair Darling has confirmed that the 2p per litre fuel duty rise planned for April will be postponed for six months to support business and families already facing sharp increases in the price of fuel.

"Fuel duty is due to rise again in April but because I want to support the economy now and help business and families I will postpone that increase until October," Darling said in his Budget speech.

But the rise is now scheduled to take place on 1 October, followed by another 1.84ppl increase on 1 April 2009, and a further 0.5ppl above inflation on 1 April 2010.
