CCTV parking laws come into force

Date: 02 April 2008

New countrywide CCTV parking laws have come into operation.

Councils outside of London are now allowed to issue tickets on the basis of camera evidence, and parking authorities everywhere can now issue tickets by post.

As revealed in BusinessCar in February, the amount of parking fines have been much higher in London, where cameras are already in use.

Figures released by GE Fleet services showed that the top five fine-issuing authorities were based in the capital.

In addition, authorities will now have the ability to issue parking fines on a scale according to the severity of the infringement.

Despite the potential rise in tickets issued, transport minister Rosie Winterton said: "The new parking framework makes it clear that councils should not use parking enforcement as a means of raising revenue or set targets for the number of tickets issued."
