Citroen leads city-car trio improvements

Date: 05 November 2008

Citroen has upstaged Peugeot and Toyota in announcing a facelift, improved economy and lower CO2 levels for its C1 ahead of similar revamping of the Czech-built 107 and Aygo counterparts.

Claiming the 68PS 1.0-litre petrol-engined, three and five-door C1 is the UK market's lowest CO2 rated petrol car Citroen points to a 106g/km figure, down 2.7% on its predecessor and 62.8mpg fuel economy, a 2.1% improvement.

The revamp of the Czech trio, due on sale early next year, anticipates the arrival of Ford's new Ka in January. Apart from the technical changes Citroen has restyled the C1's front end with a more sculpted "family" look and "upgraded" the interior.

Citroen's 1.4-litre, 55PS diesel model, with marginally higher CO2 figures but a 68.9mpg return benefits from the cosmetic upgrade but remains technically unchanged.

Citroen expects a "modest increase" in the C1's prices. Under 5% of C1 sales are diesels, which involve a £990 price differential, compared to Ford's equivalent £700 for its 1.3-litre Multijet diesel shared with Fiat and GM.

Toyota has deleted the diesel version from its catalogue although Peugeot continues with the higher economy option.
