DETROIT SHOW: Sporty Passat CC revealed

Date: 14 January 2008

Volkswagen has revealed a new sporty addition to the Passat range called the CC, which it claims has coupe styling with the practicality of a four-door body.

While the CC is longer and wider than the standard Passat, it is also 50mm lower. To further differentiate from its saloon sibling, the new version gets an Eos-style nose and a panoramic glass roof.

The engines of the range also receive an upgrade, with a choice of two diesel and three petrol. A 1.8-litre 160PS engine, a 2.0-litre 200PS engine and a 3.6-litre V6 300PS powertrain (with all-wheel drive) capable of 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds are all available. A 2.0-litre diesel is offered with outputs of 140 and 170PS.

Volkswagen is also offering Dynamic Drive Control as an option. This system gives the driver the choice of three settings to soften or firm up the ride and make the steering sportier or more comfortable as desired.

UK sales will start in late summer and prices are expected to start at about £18,000.

However, as VW have decided that CC stands for 'Comfort Coupe' rather than the usual 'Coupe Convertible', there are no plans for the range to include a drop-top version.
