Eight new cars score top marks with NCAP

Date: 01 December 2008

Eight cars, including the new Vauxhall Insignia and Ford Fiesta, have scored five stars in Euro NCAP's latest round of testing.

The Insignia managed a score of 35 out of a possible 37 in the evaluation, but was bettered by the new Renault Megane, which scored a maximum 37 points and five stars.

This may be the last time that manufacturers obtain the five-star score for a while, with NCAP introducing new regulations in February. ESP anti-skid technology and whiplash testing will be included from then onwards.

The other cars to achieve the maximum score were the Alfa Mito, the Peugeot 308CC, VW's new Golf, the Honda Accord and Volvo's new small 4x4, the XC60. Not one of the vehicles tested managed any higher than four stars in child protection, though.

NCAP also released the results for the latest in its newest section of testing: pick-ups. The Ford Ranger managed only two stars in the adult test and three in child protection.
