EXCLUSIVE: Hertz brings big brand credibility to car clubs

Date: 02 September 2008   |   Author: Tristan Young

Rental giant Hertz is to launch a city car club in the UK, mainland Europe and the US in the next few months, according to BusinessCar's sources.

Hertz is the only major daily rental company to enter a market occupied by a host of smaller businesses.

Commenting on its car club intentions, a spokesman said: "Hertz plans to launch car-sharing initiatives in select US and European cities this year, and add cities next year and beyond."

Although car-sharing clubs have been in existence for several years they have failed to become mainstream. However, the pressure to become more eco-friendly has seen the sector grow significantly in the past year.

"Car sharing from Hertz will be an environmentally friendly program that gives members access to a self-service fleet spread throughout an area local to them. We will deploy leading-edge technology to make the entire rental process as easy and customer-friendly as possible," said the spokesman. "Customers will benefit from the heritage a strong, trusted brand like Hertz brings. We will announce exact locations at a later date."

While Hertz is the only major daily rental firm to currently do this, rival Avis ran a car club called Urbigo until two years ago, when it pulled the operation due to lack of uptake.

Commenting on the possibility of re-entering the market, Avis said it had no plans to do so, but would not rule out something in the future.
