Volkswagen has revealed its fastest-ever standard edition Golf GTi.

Pictured as a production-ready concept car, the sixth generation model, due in the UK next summer, is powered by a 210PS 2.0-litre petrol engine. Despite the 10PS power increase over its predecessor, the new GTi emits 178g/km of CO2, down 11g/km, and VW claims a combined mpg of 37.6.

The GTi will be visibly recognisable by the red grille surround also used on previous generations, as well as the smoked rear lights and pair of chrome exhaust pipes. On the inside, a flat-bottom steering wheel, sports seats and unique instruments mark out the GTi.

Standard equipment will include seven airbags, ESP and climate control, while VW's adaptive chassis control system will be an option.

Full spec and pricing will be announced nearer the on-sale date.
