The start point for the best source of fleet information

'Grey fleet' duty of care inspection service launched

Independent servicing network Nationwide Autocentre has launched a 19-point duty of care inspection service aimed at businesses with grey fleet vehicles.

Grey fleet vehicles, those cars owned by employees but used on company business, are widely thought to be one area in which fleets are particularly exposed to prosecution under the new Corporate Manslaughter Act.

The service is the latest move by Nationwide Autocentre to boost its fleet business. The company is expanding its network of service centres at a rate of 20 a year with the total standing at 216 centres today.

Speaking to BusinessCar, chief executive Duncan Wilkes said the firm's strategy was to be as credible as the franchised dealer networks with costs in line with an independent garage.

"Our customers are looked after as well as at a franchised dealer, but franchised networks costs are higher," said Wilkes. "Their locations are set up for sales not for servicing, which means their costs of branding is higher and they often have lower capacity.

"Our strategy works, we spend a lot of time making sure we can deliver."

Wilkes claimed Nationwide was the only servicing network that could offer a national single agreement on servicing costs and added it could beat all standard rates from franchised dealers.

"99% of our fleet work is collect and deliver, and savings over a franchised dealer depend on brand.

"We're half the price of premium brands, 30 or 40% cheaper on Renault and VW and 20% cheaper than Ford and Vauxhall. We'll always offer double-digit savings."
