Lexus, famed for its range of hybrid cars, is also planning more conventional ways of lowering CO2 outputs to make its cars more attractive to business drivers.

Speaking to BusinessCar, newly appointed Lexus GB director Belinda Poole said: "We're working with engineers in Japan to get lower CO2 figures on current cars."

Poole said Lexus parent firm Toyota Motor Corporation is looking at emissions regulations around the world including US and EU regulations. "It takes time to do this, but they're working on it now."

She added: "We've got to drive CO2 down on our whole range, not just individual models.

"Lexus has a small range, so there's a small number of engines to work on and we need to keep it simple for the customer."

Poole hinted the first improvements would come within a year.
