London CO2 charge scrapped

Sub-121g/km cars will no longer be free from London's C-charge. New London mayor Boris Johnson has kept his election promise to scrap the proposed CO2-based congestion charge scheme scheduled for launch later this year.

Models at or below 120g/km were to be given free access to the central London zone, while cars and pick-ups over 225g/km were scheduled to be hit with a £25 per day fee from this October, but previous mayor Ken Livingstone's plans have been overturned by the new regime.

Instead, the current £8 per day between 7am-6pm system will remain in place, which also means exemptions for LPG-converted and hybrid vehicles, including the Lexus RX400h, GS350h and LS600h. For a full list of exempt vehicles, see the Powershift register.

Johnson is also about to embark on a consultation period regarding the western extension of the charge introduced despite widespread opposition from businesses and residents in February 2007.
