Low CO2 VW Golf hybrid here next year

Date: 11 March 2008

Volkswagen has confirmed the 2009 arrival of a hybrid Golf returning 83mpg and 89g/km of CO2.

The model, shown as a concept at last week's Geneva motor show, will be launched when the new sixth-generation Golf arrives next spring.

The Golf hybrid uses a three-cylinder 1.2-litre diesel engine with 73PS, aided by a 27PS electric motor, mated to a seven-speed automatic DSG gearbox.

The Golf hybrid follows on from the recently launched Golf Bluemotion, which offers 119g/km of CO2 and 62.8mpg.

The latest Bluemotion model, a Sharan, was also revealed at Geneva. Employing aerodynamic, gearbox and engine changes, it drops CO2 from 177 to 159g/km and raises claimed average economy to 45.6mpg.
