LPG's on the comeback trail, says Autogas

LPG could make a comeback according to its leading supplier, Autogas.
Following a poll carried out by Zussi Research, the company claims that 47% of motorists "have considered" having their cars converted to the alternative fuel in the face of escalating petrol and diesel prices. Autogas also says and that last year's volume of 12,500 LPG conversions will rise "significantly".
The poll's findings, however, could be compromised by recent falls in pump costs, particularly at supermarkets, as crude oil prices drop globally.
Claiming a potential 40% saving in fuel bills, after pump prices and lower fuel consumption are factored in, Chris Taylor, Autogas's business development manager, said the average £1800 conversion cost meant it would take 22 months for drivers averaging 20,000 miles a year to recoup the initial expense.
Although business car drivers were not specifically questioned in the poll, Taylor pointed to the fleet car taxation benefits of 17% and 2% lower CO2 emissions than petrol and diesel respectively, with attendant benefits including London congestion charge exemption.
