Mercedes SL63 AMG revealed

Date: 07 March 2008

Mercedes performance division AMG has committed itself to cutting the average emissions of its cars by 30% by 2012.

Speaking at the reveal of the new 525PS SL63 AMG, Mercedes AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg said the division would use efficient petrol engines, stop-start technology and eventually hybrid motors to reach its target.

However, he dismissed diesel power because of a lack of customer demand, but added that if demand changed AMG would be ready to produce a diesel sports car.

According to one AMG engineer the 30% reduction target would mean an average CO2 output of 200g/km across the AMG range.

The new SL63 AMG is capable of 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed limited to 155mph. The car goes on sale in the UK this summer.
