Milan introduces "eco-pass" traffic charge

Date: 07 January 2008

Officials in Milan have followed London by introducing a new charge for vehicles entering the city.

In a bid to cut pollution, drivers will be charged between 2 Euros and 10 Euros to enter into a three square mile area in the centre of the city. The charge varies according to the level of vehicle emissions. Electric and hybrid cars will be exempt from the charge, as will cars that have had particulate filter fitted.

The scheme is initially being run on a year long trial basis and will operate on weekdays between 7.30am and 7.30pm.
