Mitsubishi readies new off-roader

Date: 29 May 2008

Mitsubishi CX concept

Mitsubishi is planning a new small off-roader - a replacement for the Pinin that will arrive in the next 18 months and will potentially be previewed by a concept car at this October's Paris motor show.

The car will arrive along with newly developed diesel engines of 1.8- to 2.2-litre capacities, probably put to work in the new Lancer at the same time as the new 4x4.

The recently launched Lancer now gives Mitsubishi three models capable of reaching up to around 10,000 units a year, along with the L200 pick-up and Colt supermini.

"That's a good position for the company," said UK sales and marketing boss Lance Bradley. "Until fairly recently we had the L200 on 10,000 and the next was doing around 4000. We had all our eggs in one basket."

Bradley also said interest is building in the Outlander off-roader now that early supply constraints are lifting, pointing to the fact that the model is the "lowest CO2-emitting seven-seat SUV."
