More powerful BMWs gain new green tech

Date: 16 September 2008

BMW has confirmed it is working on stop-start technology for its six-cylinder engines.

It is currently only fitted to smaller engines as part of the Efficient Dynamics programme, but larger-engined models are scheduled to be added in the next 12 months.

BMW has been slow to develop stop-start for its six cylinder cars as most are sold as automatics, and currently no brand has found a way of making stop-start work with an auto gearbox.

The firm has also confirmed its new seven-speed double-clutch gearbox launched on the M3 earlier this year will be offered on 335i models of its 3-series coupe and convertible.

The £1640 gearbox offers better emissions, economy and performance. Saloon and estate version may follow, depending on market reaction.
