New Audi Q5 revealed

Date: 19 April 2008

Audi's all-new Q5, pictured here for the first time in production form, is aiming to win buyers looking for the sportiest small 4x4.

Audi claims the Q5, revealed today at the Beijing motor show, is the lowest car in its class at 1.65 metres in height, which adds to the sporty looks.

The Q5, which will rival the BMW X3, Land Rover Freelander and Volvo XC60, will go on sale later this year with a choice of three engines - two diesel and one petrol.

The petrol is a new version of the 2.0-litre turbo unit found in other Audis and VW Group vehicles. It produces 211PS, giving the Q5 a 0-62mph time of 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 138mph. Fuel consumption for the petrol Q5 comes in at 27.7mpg on the average cycle.

The two diesel engines are a 170PS 2.0-litre with 35.1mpg and 0-62mph time of 9.5 seconds, and a 240PS 3.0-litre V6 coming in at 30.6mpg and a 0-62mph time of 6.5 seconds.

The 2.0-litre TDI is available with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the two higher-powered engines are available with a new seven-speed clever DSG automatic gearbox.

Three body trim levels will be available - standard, S-line and off-road. The off-road pack includes underbody protection and 19-inch alloys while S-line adds a sportier look to the car.

Audi claims a spacious interior thanks to an overall length of 4.63m and a width of 1.88m. The Q5 has three full-size rear seats as well as rear seat backs that can be tilt adjusted.

The rear seats can also be fitted with an optional front-to-rear sliding option to vary boot space and legroom depending on an owner's needs.

Boot space is an impressive 540 litres with the seats up. However, Audi has not specified if this will be reduced for the UK market, as happened to sister car the VW Tiguan, which in Europe does not come with a spare wheel, but does in the UK - significantly reducing boot space.

With the seats folded Audi claims a boot space of 1560 litres.

Pricing for the Q5 has yet to be revealed but expect it to come close to chief rival the BMW X3, which in 2.0-litre diesel form starts at just less than £30,000.
