New BMW Z4 revealed

Date: 15 December 2008

BMW has released the first official pictures of the all-new Z4 sportscar.

The new Z4, which is due on sale in May 2009, features a folding hard top roof, rather than the previous cloth roof. The new hard-top can be lowered or raised in 20 seconds, according to BMW.

BMW has answered critics of the current generation Z4's ultra-hard ride by offering the new Z4 with clever suspension which offers three different levels of comfort.

"By way of comparison, the Sport+ [hardest] setting of the new car is comparable to the outgoing Z4's standard ride comfort level," said a BMW spokesman.

The new BMW Z4 is also being offered with a twin-clutch automatic gearbox as an option which improves fuel economy and emissions figures.

The new BMW Z4 is larger than its predecessor measuring 148mm longer at 4239mm and 9mm wider at 1790mm, and this results in greater interior space and luggage capacity which ranges from 180 to 310 litres.

BMW has also introduced its new naming system for the BMW Z4, with cars carrying the sDrive name plus an engine indicator, for example sDrive30i for the 3.0-litre 258PS car.

Prices for the new BMW Z4 will be announced in 2009, but are expected to be slightly up on the current model which ranges from £25,000 for the 2.0-litre petrol to £36,000 for the 3.0-litre Sport automatic.
