Nurses call for mileage rate hike

Nurses have joined the growing number of organisations putting pressure on the Government to increase AMAP mileage rates for those using their own cars for business travel.
In a letter to Chancellor Alastair Darling printed in the Royal College of Nursing's in-house magazine, RCN general secretary Dr Peter Carter has called for mileage rates for community nurses to be increased because of the rising cost of fuel as nurses are effectively subsidising the NHS.
Nurses currently operate under NHS guidelines, which advises payments of 33.5p a mile for the first 9000 miles and 18.3p a mile thereafter.
However, HMRC's approved mileage allowance payments allow for 40 pence per mile, tax free, to be claimed for the first 10,000 miles and 25p a mile thereafter.
AMAP rates have remained unchanged for the past six years - the time when they were first introduced.
