Public sector fleets given 130g/km goal

Date: 14 March 2008   |   Author: Guy Bird

The Government could soon urge the public sector to slice new fleet car CO2 emissions to a 130g/km average by 2011 if it takes up recommendations in the latest King Review.

Published on the same day as the Budget (12 March) The King Review of Low Carbon Cars (Part II), subtitled "recommendations for action", offers 40 ideas covering reducing vehicle emissions, cleaner fuels, consumer choice and research and development.

The one that public sector fleets will be watching most closely is number 22, that states: "All public bodies should look to match central Government by setting an ambition to reduce the average emissions of new vehicles procured for administrative purposes to 130g/km by 2010-11."

Given current fleet life-cycle and that it is already spring 2008, any public sector not already aiming at this target for new cars (Professor King doesn't include vans and heavy trucks yet) should be taking note.

While the report has only just been published and is, for now, just a series of recommendations, the Government did commission it and Alistair Darling has already heeded some of its ideas in his first Budget - the steep hike in VED for high emitters for example.

The Government set out its own 130g/km new car target in 2007.
